Why Exterior Epoxy Outperforms Concrete Sealers in San Antonio
Walk up the driveway of any San Antonio home built before 2010 and you'll likely see the same thing: bare concrete gray, streaked with tire marks, spalled at the edges, and faded in the Texas sun. It's not a maintenance failure - it's a materials failure. The concrete sealers sold at big-box stores and applied by landscape crews have a useful life of 12–24 months under San Antonio UV before they begin to chalk, peel, and lose water resistance. Exterior epoxy is a fundamentally different product - and the gap between the two systems matters more in our climate than almost anywhere else in the country.
What Texas Heat and UV Actually Do to Cheap Sealers
Most residential concrete sealers are acrylic-based - either solvent-borne or water-borne - with a service temperature ceiling well below what San Antonio pavement reaches in July. Surface temperatures on a south-facing driveway in San Antonio can reach 150°F+ on a 105°F day. At these temperatures, acrylic sealers soften, lose cohesive strength, and begin to pick up tire marks and contaminants that become permanently bonded to the sealer film. UV exposure simultaneously breaks down the polymer chains in the acrylic, causing the chalky white surface degradation visible on most sealed driveways after two or three Texas summers. The result is a surface that looks worse than bare concrete - chalky, peeling, and permanently marked.
Acid Stain vs. Epoxy for Driveways: Why Epoxy Wins for Exterior Traffic
Acid staining is an excellent interior finish and works well on covered patios, but it's a poor choice for open driveways under heavy vehicle traffic. Acid staining colors the concrete but doesn't add structural coating thickness - the sealant over a stained driveway is subject to the same abrasion from tires as any other thin sealer. Tire marks penetrate the sealer and stain the colored concrete permanently. By contrast, exterior epoxy adds a bonded coating layer 15–25 mils thick that resists tire abrasion, prevents penetration of oil and fuel, and provides a surface that can be cleaned without damaging the finish. For decorative driveways where color and texture are both priorities, we can apply epoxy over an acid-stained base - getting the aesthetic of stained concrete with the durability of an epoxy coating system.
How Polyaspartic Topcoats Handle Thermal Cycling
San Antonio concrete expands and contracts significantly between winter lows and summer highs - the temperature differential can exceed 80°F over the course of a year. Standard epoxy resins are relatively rigid and can microcrack over time from this thermal cycling, particularly at control joints and saw cuts. Polyaspartic topcoats - the aliphatic polyurea family used in our exterior systems - have significantly higher elongation and flexibility than standard epoxies, allowing them to move with the concrete rather than fighting it. This is the primary reason we specify polyaspartic topcoats rather than clear epoxy for all San Antonio exterior applications. The added UV stability of aliphatic chemistry (vs. aromatic epoxy that yellows immediately in sun) is a secondary but equally important benefit.
Anti-Slip Aggregate: Essential for San Antonio's Rain Patterns
San Antonio receives most of its annual rainfall in concentrated burst events - the kind of heavy downpours that soak a patio or driveway in minutes. A smooth epoxy or polyaspartic topcoat is slippery when wet, particularly on slight slopes and steps. Anti-slip aggregate - typically aluminum oxide or quartz sand broadcast at 1–2 lbs per 100 square feet into the wet topcoat - creates a tactile surface texture that dramatically improves wet traction without materially changing the appearance at normal viewing distances. The aggregate is sized and distributed to be nearly invisible at eye level while being clearly felt underfoot. We include anti-slip aggregate as standard on all exterior applications: driveways, patios, pool decks, and steps. It's not an optional add-on - in our view, exterior epoxy without anti-slip aggregate is a liability.
San Antonio Clay Soil, Joint Movement, and Why Prep Matters More Outside
San Antonio sits on expansive clay soils - the kind that swell when wet and contract when dry, producing seasonal movement in concrete slabs. Driveways and patios laid directly on this clay base will develop cracks and joint movement over time regardless of concrete quality. A coating applied over active cracks will crack too - unless those cracks are properly filled with flexible crack filler before coating. Our exterior prep protocol includes polyurea crack filler at all working cracks and saw-cut joints. Polyurea is flexible enough to accommodate minor joint movement without cracking the repair - unlike rigid epoxy or cementitious fillers that re-crack within months on a moving slab. This is one of the most important differences between a professional exterior epoxy installation and a DIY coating that fails within a year.
Driveway vs. Patio: Different Surfaces, Different Specs
A driveway carries vehicle weight - typically 3,000–6,000 lbs for a passenger car, more for trucks and SUVs. The point load from tires on a turning vehicle creates significant shear stress on the surface coating. We specify a higher-solids epoxy base coat for driveways (typically 100% solids, 15–20 mil DFT) compared to patio applications where foot traffic is the primary load. Patios can use a somewhat thinner base coat but benefit from more attention to UV stability in the topcoat, since they're typically in direct sun exposure for more hours per day than a driveway. Pool decks require an additional wet-area specification - the topcoat needs resistance to pool chemicals (chlorine, pH adjusters) in addition to UV and slip requirements.
